What is
Occupational Therapy?
An Occupational Therapist (OT) is a qualified health professional
who is trained in enabling people to develop maximum participation
in activities of daily living or 'occupations'.
OT's view 'occupation' as any purposeful and meaningful activity a
person
chooses to engages in. Thus Occupational Therapy enables people to develop confidence
and independence to perform life skills.
Examples of
Occupations for children ...
-
Self-carer (bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing)
-
Student (handwriting, cutting, focusing attention, listening)
-
Friend (interacting with others, play skills)
-
Brother and son/sister and daughter (play, sharing, chores)
-
Sports person (gross motor skills eg jumping, running,
hopping, catching/throwing etc, ability to participate
in a group).
Children can experience difficulties in any of these areas and this
impacts on their skill development, self-esteem and confidence. |
